Kersnovskaya, "How much is a person worth?"

Thanks so much for posting this incredible, tragic, yet hopeful story!Daniel Wilcoxhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05178375087492786696noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7217199.post-31945579640819055112016-08-26T07:42:06.262-07:002016-08-26T07:42:06.262-07:00So tragic! You wrote about "The church milita...So tragic! You wrote about "The church militant: "... Violence is the norm." (Sadly, we know that this tendency isn't unique to one country or confession.)"

This is one of the most incomprehensible questions which has troubled me since the 1960s--Why do the vast majority of Christians and other religious people, especially evangelical ones strongly support war?

It reminds me of the tragic book on early Christian history, Jesus Wars, by the historian Philip Jenkins.

And of the American Christian leader who said that "God's gift" to the U.S. was the atom bomb:-(!

And even of many Quakers such as conservative California Yearly Meeting (where my wife and I used to be members) which supported nuclear weapons!

And of very liberal Friends which also support lethal violence.

And, lastly, that reminds me of the powerful lines in The Brothers Karamazov by Dostoevsky, where the character Ivan says:

"Imagine that you are creating a fabric of human destiny with the object of making men happy in the end, giving them peace and rest at last, but that it was essential and inevitable to torture to death only one tiny creature -- that baby beating its breast with its fist, for instance -- and to found that edifice on its unavenged tears, would you consent to be the architect on those conditions? Tell me, and tell the truth."Daniel Wilcoxhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05178375087492786696noreply@blogger.com
