Personally, I fear cruelty far more than death. I cannot imagine how you can redefine torture as involving nothing short of organ failure without blessing the use of cruelty.
In all the White House pleading agains "restrict[ing] the president's authority to protect Americans effectively from terrorist attack and bringing terrorists to justice," I am reminded of Psalm 14:2-3—The LORD looks down from heaven on humankind to see if there are any who are wise, who seek after God. They have all gone astray, they are all alike perverse; there is no one who does good, no, not one.
I don't normally insist on the most pessimistic interpretation of this passage (or on Psalm 53:1-3, or Romans 3:11-12), but these blasts of refreshing biblical realism sure help me put some perspective on the sanctimonious bobbing and twisting in high places to justify the unjustifiable.
