It is hard to imagine a worse outcome to the hostage situation than the one that is unfolding now in and near the city of Beslan. Russian media make prominent mention of the presence of Arabs among the hostage-takers. Another prominent story: proposed legislation to make the punishments for terrorist activity more severe. Analysis can wait; the most obvious reality at the moment is the reality of hundreds of families in shock, some preparing to bury their dead; others maintaining vigil over their wounded.
